Confessions of A Shopaholic

In our most recent movie screening, we showed ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’, originally a bestseller written by Madeleine Wickham as SophieKinsella. ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ revolves around a girl, Rebecca, who gets into trouble because of her shopping habits, and eventually shows what she does and how she attempts to solve the problem she creates. After the movie screening, we offered two thought provoking questions to our Library and Publications students.

Here’s what they had to say:

Question: Man’s appetite for consumerism is shamelessly limitless. What’s your view?

“Men only need one tuxedo, why do they have so many?”
Several people conveyed the idea of need versus want, and although ‘men onlyneed one tuxedo’, consumerism can help others to achieve self-confidence andattractiveness.
Question: Comment on the view that consumerism and capitalism is at the expense of conserving the environment.
"Things we buy are at the expense of the environment.”

The general idea was that consumerism affects the environment negatively, as a lot ofresources, for example leather and crocodile skin, is needed to create the products that consumers demand.
We came to the conclusion that one major way of conserving the environment is for consumers to decrease their demands for products.‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ is certainly a movie worth watching, as behind thepretty faces in the film, lies valuable life lessons one can learn.
